Mechanical Engineering

Mechanical Engineering Department of Assam Engineering College, Jalukbari is the pioneer in the state of Assam, offering techno-managerial education under the aegis of State Technical Education, Government of Assam. It was the result of a far-sighted realization of the past leaders to develop technical manpower in the post independent Assam and to raise the standard of living of the people of the whole North Eastern region by way of industrialization. As such the Mechanical Engineering Department came into existence in 1957, after the emergence of Assam Engineering College at Jalukbari in an atmosphere of semi-urban environment. Since then, time has remained as the silent spectator for the relentless service provided by it to the country and other parts of the globe, despite many ups and downs in its stride. The department feels proud that many of its alumni are bringing laurels to the state of Assam, not only in engineering but also in other fields as well.
At the moment, MED is providing post-graduate course as well as research in various fields of Mechanical Engineering. Moreover, new undergraduate department on Industrial & Production Engineering (IPE) is being attached to MED since 1997, using the resources of Mechanical Engineering. The department has successfully celebrated its Golden Jubilee in 2007, with all round involvement of its faculties, staff, students and alumni. The present impetus is towards the modernization of its existing facilities, including the laboratories, workshops and research amenities for providing state of the art education in the field of Mechanical Engineering.
The department has got well equipped laboratories of integrated mechanics, meteorology, computerized numeric control (CNC), heat engine, fluid mechanics, instrumentation, material science, modern I. C. engine and a workshop.
The course is designed to develop appropriate skills and impart comprehensive knowledge in the field of mechanical engineering. It covers pure engineering subjects viz., mechanics, engineering design and graphics, thermal engineering, fluid mechanics, material science and manufacturing processes. The course also includes four-week compulsory summer training in the pre-final year.
Major Area of Focus
The department also offers specialization in I. C. Engines, refrigeration and air conditioning, hydraulic machinery, compressors and gas turbines, CAD, CAM, operation research and machine tools. The recent additions to the list of specialization are Robotics and Finite element methods in engineering.
